| Description: | The Seminole Pow Wow started in 1967 by the fire department and the Warhawks Booster Club. Seminole was not a city yet. Holland Magnum was the president of the volunteer firefighters. His wife, Cat, read an article in the now-defunct Seminole Courier reporting that the Warhawks stadium at Seminole High School needed money to be completed. To build a fence around the stadium would cost $1,600. Magnum thought of having a fund-raiser through the fire department to raise the money, and it was his wife's suggestion to name it a Pow Wow. Magnum remembers his late wife sitting at a coffee table reading the newspaper. "She said, 'Well, you know, we could call it the Seminole Pow Wow.'" A parade was added to the day, and the Booster Club and firefighters served chicken dinners at Station 29 on 113th Street and raised $2,100. After paying for the fence, the extra money was put into a fund for the next year, and the Pow Wow Festival & Parade became a community tradition. The small-town festival has grown over the years and now includes the parade, a carnival, community events and restaurateurs and has grown to a weekend-long festivity. | |
